Nabeshima Mitsushige is a traditional Japanese name; the surname (or school name), Nabeshima, precedes the first name (or the artist's name).

Nabeshima Mitsushige (鍋 島 光 茂, July 10, 1632 - July 2, 1700) is a daimyo from the early days of Edo. He is known for his ban on junshi, a form of traditional suicide by which an obligate follows his lord in death. It is because of this aversion, for the junshi that Yamamoto Tsunetomo, one of his obligated favorites, writes the Hagakure after his death. Source of translationedit code
