Otto I van Salm

Castle

Otto I van Salm (ca. 1085 - 1148) was Count of Rheineck, and guardian of Rolandswerth Abbey (at Remagen), and Paltsgraaf on the Rhine.

Otto was the son of the German counter king Herman van Salm and Sophia van Formbach. They were one of the most pious families of that time. He built the castle Rheineck. Around 1115 he married Geertruid van Northeim, widow of paltsgraaf Siegfried. As a result he acquired the office of paltsgraaf on the Rhine. Otto acquired the castle of Treis by legacy. Emperor Hendrik V did not recognize the legacy and conquered Treis in 1121. When his supporter Lotharius III of Supplinburg was elected King in 1125, Otto returned to Treis's castle. He also obtained the county of Bentheim. Otto rebuilt the castle of Bentheim that was destroyed. In 1136 he joined Lotharius to Italy. After the death of Lotharius (1137) Otto lost the function of paltsgraaf and the castle of Treis. For the rest of his life he was in conflict with the new paltsgraaf and the Archbishop of Trier.

Otto's wife Geertruid was the daughter and heirs of Hendrik de Vette, Markgraaf of Friesland and Count of Northeim, and of Gertrudis of Brunswijk. Children of Otto and Geertruid were: Externe link
