Clarke Abel

Clarke Abel (England, 1780 - India, 1826) was an English botanist and surgeon.

Between 1816 and 1818, Abel was a physician and natural investigator in the William Amherst delegation during his visits to Guangdong and the Chinese Imperial Court in Beijing to establish relations with the Chinese emperor. Joseph Banks had recommended Abel as a natural researcher to the delegation. Abel collected and observed various wild and cultivated plants in China. Following his stay in China, he wrote Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, and of a Voyage to and from that Country in the Years 1816 and 1817 that appeared in 1818.

The genus Abelia has been named by botanist Robert Brown. The species Abelia chinensis was discovered by Abel in China. Bibliography Externe link
