Fukuhara-kyō


Fukuhara-kyō (福 原 京, Fukuhara-kyō) was the capital of Japan from June 1180 until November of the same year; at the end of the Heian era.

This town covered a part of the present city of Kōbe, and was originally a commercial port. In 1180 by orders of Taira no Kiyomori it was decided to move the capital of Japan from Kyoto to Fukuhara in order to strengthen trade with China, but a few months later, with the threat of the Minamoto clan at the beginning of the Genpei Wars, to Kyoto.
