Noctuaire de Maurice Ohana is a short educational play, destined for the year-end competition of the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt. It is dedicated to Jean Brizard (cello) who made the creation with Alain Louvier (piano), during the festival of La Rochelle in 1975. The duration of execution is about 7 minutes.

His writing is deliberately simple and clear, while offering a range of technical and expressive possibilities of the cello. Maurice Ohana showed a certain interest for this instrument since he composed Sirtes in 1970, at the request of Mstislav Rostropovitch and, in 1978, The Ring of Tamarit, concerto for violoncello and orchestra.
