County of Caroní


Caroni County occupies 557 square kilometers (215 square miles) in the western central part of the island of Trinidad, the largest island in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is located south and southwest of St. George County, west of Nariva County and northern county of Victoria. To the west it borders with the Gulf of Paria. Caroní County includes the town of Chaguanas, the largest city (by population) in the country. Administratively, it is divided between the municipality of Chaguanas, the Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo Regional Corporation and the Tunapuna-Piarco Regional Corporation. The county was divided into four sectors: Chaguanas, Couva, Cunupia and Montserrat.

The County of Caroni, which takes its name from the Caroni River, extends from the hills of the Central Cordillera in the lowlands of the Plains of Caroni and the Swamp of Caroni. It is strongly associated with sugarcane and sugar related elements. The now-defunct company and state sugar company, Caroni (1975) Ltd. took its name from the place.

Caroni is divided into four spaces - Cunupia, Chaguanas, Couva and Montserrat. The main cities of the county of Caroni are Chaguanas and Couva. The port and industrial area of ​​Point Lisas is also located in Caroni.
