Passang Lhamo

Passang Lhamo is a religious nun, activist and Chinese singer, originally from Tibet and currently residing in India.

Lhamo, baptized by the Buddhist religion, was ordained a nun at 14 years of age. According to the government of Tibet in exile, on May 25, 1994, Lhamo, along with four other nuns, went to Lhasa to shout slogans and protest the PRC rule. Both were imprisoned by police and sadly spent their days in Drapchi prison in November 1994 along with 13 other nuns to serve a five-year sentence accused of endangering state security. The CTA alleged in April 1996, in which all inmates of Unit 3 of Drapchi prison, consisted of about 100 political prisoners, as they began a hunger strike in protest of the harsh treatment they were receiving at Drapchi. The long week of strike, made the prison officials with some concern, was to end the brutality as it could cause death to inmates.

Lhamo finally settled free on May 24, 1999, after five full years in Drapchi. She returned briefly to Penppo, but fled in exile to Dharamsala, India, where she currently serves as a nun in a convent on the order of Ganden Choeling, near the monastery and residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Since then, she has done much to raise awareness of the cause of Tibet's independence, including numerous singing performances at several traditional festivals in the United States and Canada.
