Torrey Botanical Society

Torrey Botanical Society (formerly Torrey Botanical Club) began in the 1860s by colleagues of John Torrey. It is the oldest Botanical Society of America. The Society promotes the exploration and study of plant life, with special emphasis on the flora of New York City and its metropolitan area.

The objectives of the society "to promote interest in botany, and to collect and disseminate information on all phases of plant science." The Society promotes and supports floristic curiosity through indoor gatherings (conferences), outdoor gatherings (herbal walks), fellowships that support postgraduate studies, and publications. The Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society (until 1997 The Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club), is the oldest botanical journal of the Americas, its main objective is the dissemination of scientific knowledge about plants (in the sense broad, of plants and fungi). Basic research is published in all areas of plant biology, except horticulture, with emphasis on research done in and on plants in the Western Hemisphere.

The conferences are from October to May at the New York Botanical Garden and are free and open to the public.

Plant tours, from April to October throughout New York and its metropolitan area, are free and open to the public.
