Vällingby

Vällingby is a district in the western part of Stockholm. It was planned at the beginning of 1950 as a new city, being inaugurated in 1954 and quickly assimilated like a new district of the Swedish capital.

It became the first "ABC City" (ABC as an acronym for "Arbete, Bostad, Centrum", which translates as Work, Housing, Center), a district designed to offer its inhabitants everything they needed providing them with a better quality of life.

Within a few years, the number of inhabitants of Vällingby reached 25,000. In this new neighborhood was sought to avoid the possibility that it became a dormitory, as had happened with others.

The original urban plan was designed by the architect Sven Markelius, who, influenced by the organic urban planning theories characteristic of CIAM, distributed high-rise buildings in the vicinity of metro stations and, distant houses, autonomous houses and green areas. Politicians and business people participated actively in the planning process.

Also, Vällingby became an important piece of propaganda used to spread an image of harmonious Swedish well-being around the world.

However, the city did not function as expected since most of its inhabitants found work elsewhere, although this has not prevented it from increasing its popularity, and is nowadays endowed with an important cultural character. / p> Bibliography
