Worm box

Compost worms just added to worm box

A worm box is a bowl of compost worms that make compost of vegetable, fruit, garden and kitchen waste. A suitable rainworm species for this is the Eisenia fetida (also tiger or compostworm). The ordinary rainworm can not be used for this purpose. A good living environment for the worms must be created in the bin: moist, dark and not too hot or too cold.

To separate the worm's compost, the soil can be sieved, but better with (at least) two perforated bins; In one tray is fresh kitchen waste, which after a while attracts the worms due to the large food supply; the worms leave the other tray and there remains compost.

A worm box is a good alternative to a compost heap if only a balcony or terrace is available. However, the operation is not without problems: the process must be monitored regularly and adjusted if necessary by human intervention. The moisture content, temperature, aeration and pH must remain within certain limits, some types of trash may be used, others not used and worms may not be transmitted (a common mistake).
