Caparaó National Park

Caparaó National Park was established on May 24, 1961 by Federal Decree No. 50646, signed by then-President Janio Quadros. It hosts the third highest peak in the country, the Pico da Bandeira. It is part of the set of National Parks of Brazil managed by Instituto Chico Mendes for the Conservation of Biodiversity. The park has 31,800 hectares.

The park is located on the border between the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais and occupies seven cities in Espirito Santo, and four in the mining area. Around 80% of the park is in the State of Espírito Santo, with the highest peaks found on the border between the states, with Pico da Bandeira at 2,892 meters and Pico do Calçado at 2,849 meters. The Pico Cristal, with 2,770 meters is exclusively in mining territory. The park also has other smaller peaks, but also of considerable altitudes, such as Morro da Cruz do Negro (2,658 meters), Pico da Pedra Roxa (2649 meters), Pico dos Cabritos or Treasure (2,620 meters) the Pico do Tesourinho (2584 meters), and Pedra Menina (2037 meters), all in the state of Espírito Santo.

This park is one of the most important areas of the Atlantic Forest in the territory of Espírito Santo, which also covers much of the Serra do Caparaó.
