For other uses, see Entity (disambiguation).

In philosophy, an entity or entity is something that is somehow determined, or that exists. The term "entity" is a very general and vague term, which in the history of Western philosophy has been used with different senses. Some recent authors propose a distinction between the concepts of being (the act of being) and entity "object" that is), among which are Martin Heidegger and Étienne Gilson. Etymology

«Ente» comes from the Latin «ens», present participle neutral of the verb «esse» («to be»). It was introduced into the philosophical language as a translation of the Greek word "ὄν" (ón), participle of the verb "εἶναι" (which translates "eînai" and also means "to be"). Both "ὄν" and "ens" can be translated as "something that is".
