Francesco Brioschi

Francesco Brioschi (Milan, December 22, 1824 - December 13, 1897) was an Italian mathematician.

Since 1850, Brioschi was professor of analytical mechanics at the University of Pavia. After the Italian unification in 1861, he was elected to the Italian Parliament as a deputy and then twice appointed as Secretary of the Minister of Education. In 1863 he founded Milan's Technical University, where he remained connected to his death. He mainly taught in hydraulics, but sometimes also in analytical mechanics and road and hydraulic engineering. In 1865 he arrived in the Senate of Italy. In 1870 he became a member of the Academy of the Lynx, the Italian Academy of Sciences, of which he became president in 1884 after the death of Quintino Sella. He led two sheets; first the Il Politecnico review and between 1867 and 1877 also the Annali di matematica pura e applicata (Dutch translation: Annals of pure and applied mathematics). He died in 1897.

Brioschi published various algebraic theories and studied the problem of solving fifth and sixth degree equations using elliptical functions. Brioschi was also known as an excellent teacher; Among his students at the University of Pavia were Eugenio Beltrami and Luigi Cremona. R eferenties
