Fulquerio of Reims

Fulverius the Venerable (Fulko in German, Foulques in French, † 17 June 900) was archbishop of Reims from 882 until his death. It was, in the last quarter of the ninth century, the chief chief of the side opposed to being crowned king of France to Eudes (non-Carolingian member of the house of Roberts). After the deposition of the emperor of the Holy Empire Carlos III the Gordo in 887, Fulquerio (member of the free branch of the family of the Guidoni) tried to install in the throne of French Occidentalis to his relative of the Italian branch Guido III , Duke of Spoleto (and Grandfather of Charlemagne by marriage), who traveled from Italy to Langres to be crowned in January 888, but uselessly: Eudes was crowned a month later in Compiègne with the support of the French nobility to his cause, forcing Guido from Spoleto to give up the title and return to Italy. Fulquerio then supported the throne of France Occidentalis to the King of France, Orientalis Arnulfo de Carinthia, also Carolingian (Charlemagne was his great-great-grandfather via bastard) and also unsuccessfully, as the Roberts party asserted its strength and Arnulfo was by then worried about the affairs of Italy (he struggled to be recognized as emperor of the Holy Empire) and was interested in maintaining peace with the French kingdom.

Fulman finally succeeded in crowning in 893 the youngest son of Luis II the stutterer, Carlos III the Simple, while Eudes was still king. Only at his death in 898 could Charles III succeed him and restore the Carolingian dynasty in France, which from then on and throughout the tenth century was involved in wars of rivalry with the Robertinos, the royal dynasty inaugurated by Eudes.

Carlos III the Simple turned Fulman into his chancellor during the first two years of his reign, until he died in 900, assassinated by Baldwin II, Count of Flanders.
