Gío (Illano)

Gío (Xío in Asturian), is a parish that belongs to the council of Illano. It is on the western slope of the Navia River valley; in the left side downstream, on a hill, with a privileged view that covers a good section of the river, dammed by the dam of the hydroelectric power station of Doiras.

Limit with Cedemonio as it comes from the AS-12, which departs from Navia (Asturias).

On the other side of the River we find, as we descend, with: Lombatin, Villar de Bullaso, Bullaso (almost opposite) and, below, Lantero (Illano)

They are a few houses. It stands out for its architecture the house of Mojardín, also called the one of the Llomba. This house at present is not very well preserved. Old splendor of whitewashed white walls can be seen; and roof with several falls of thick slate, in bad state of conservation. There is an inner courtyard, and a coat of arms is guessed on a large entrance porch.

The Principality of Asturias is trying to repopulate the area with forest uses of native trees and pines. They also try to recover old pastures in order to enhance livestock exploitation.

On the slopes that face the river, you can see chestnut trees, birches and ancient oaks. They abound as in other bordering towns the toxo and the xesta, that in period of flowering give a yellowish color, that beautifies even more its landscape.

Nowadays along this section of the river Navia river sports are carried out. It is also not strange to see fishermen in boat, or throwing spoon from its narrow shore.
