Akwamu was an old state in the region called Gold Coast in West Africa, belonging to what is now Ghana. The main language of this state was twi.

It was founded by the Akan people around the year 1600, growing by its abundance in gold. In full swing at the beginning of the 18th century, Akwamu extended for more than 400 km along the coast, from the kingdom of Whydah (today Ouidah in Benin) in the east, to beyond Winneba (in present-day Ghana) to the west.

By the year 1710, the state began to be pressured by other social groups, such as the Ashanti, who increased their power in the area and by 1731 Akwamu ceased to exist.
