Flemish folk dance


Flemish folk dances are folk dances with a Flemish background. Flemish folk dances like danced now have a relatively recent history dating back to the beginning of the last century. In socialist circles such as the labor youth, but also the Landsbank Rooms Catholic Girls and Women, popular dances became popular. The vendelzwaaien regularly became part of the activities of the Flemish folk dance movement.

Volksdans was an essential aspect of the tractor movement, which made great progress in Flanders in the 1930s. Following the general social polarization, this broad movement was divided into, on the one hand, the Volksdanscentrale voor Vlaanderen (VDCV), which was mainly pedagogical and educational, and on the other hand the Flemish Institute for Folk Dance and Folk Music.

The Flemish Institute of Folk Dance and Folk Music (VIVO), founded in 1935, aimed to restore lost dance, to create dance groups throughout Flanders, to train dance leaders and to give home music and folk dance courses, in collaboration with existing Flemish organizations, singing parties, iron pilgrimage, and its own magazine 'De Speelman'. Expressions of our own Flemish folk art are in the forefront of promoting its own national character. Although folk dance was the main activity, attention was also paid to vendelwawaa, puppetheater, house music, and art craft.

After the Second World War, 'Folk dance' was a somewhat infected term as a result of the Nazi propaganda. Like in the Netherlands, foreign folk dances (English, Irish and later from the Balkans) were also popular in Flanders.

Light spot is often looked at its own folk dance. Yet there are still a lot of folk dance groups in Belgium. They show their own culture and folklore through dance, music, vendelen, typical costumes, singing, etc. at various domestic and foreign festivals. Although most groups only perform typical folk dances, there are also some Flemish groups trying to live the lives of Previously pictured with new creations. Danspunt is the Flemish nationally recognized Amateur dance organization that supports, among other things, folk dance activities. Danspunt also organizes training for dance leaders in particular.
