Four for four

Quattro per quattro is a composition of the Fin Aulis Sallinen.

The title was explained by the composition itself; four (nameless) particles for four musical instruments, in this case the combination of flute or hobo or clarinet, violin, cello and spinet. In retrospect, Sallinen stated that he was in a transition phase. Started as a serialist composer, he entered new ways to develop his own style, which goes more to tonality. In this work there is a short passage in which its chord chord structure is audible, even if it is only a few seconds. In addition, the composer refers to the past, for example, he applies the basso continuo technique, with the cello and spinet taking care of the bass line. The work has an open end, a concluding agreement is missing; The spinet takes care of the last tones.

Sallinen wrote the work commissioned by the conservatory in Turku, also the place of the first execution. Discography Sources
