José Loustau and Gómez de la Membrillera (Valencia de Alcántara, Cáceres, January 17, 1889 - Murcia, 1964) was a Spanish biologist. Biography

He is remembered mainly for having been Rector of the University of Murcia for a long period between 1918 and the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.

After being Rector of that University, he remained a professor until 1959, when he turned 70.

Because of its importance for the institution, it has a Museum of Natural History dedicated in the Faculty of Biology. In addition, the Institute of Secondary Education in his hometown, Valencia de Alcántara, bears his name, along with José María Valverde, illustrious writer. A street in Murcia is named after him.
