Ráuracos

The Ráuracos (in Latin, Rauraci or Raurici) were a Gallic town of the region of Basle. The main cities of the Ráuracos were Augusta Rauricorum (Augst, near Basel) and Argentovaria (Horbourg-Wihr). Its territory corresponded to that of the future diocese of Basel. The Ráuracos joined the helvecios in their emigration and were defeated by the Romans in the battle of Bibracte. The remains of the tribe returned to their place of origin and founded an oppidum where today the cathedral of Basel rises. Its name was recovered in times of the French Revolution to form a republic (the Republic Rauraciana) that later would be united to France like department of Mont Terrible.
