Monodromy is the study of the behavior of certain mathematical objects "when one turns around a singularity". A first aspect of this phenomenon is found in the field of complex functions admitting several determinations in the complex spunal plane, such as logarithm or rational powers: follow continuously a determination of such a function along a yaw around the origin leads after one turn to get another determination. For a given function, this phenomenon is usually coded in a group, called monodromy group, which is the quotient of the fundamental group of the surface on which the different determinations of the function are initially defined corresponding in Galois correspondence to the smallest surface on which the function becomes unambiguous. code
