Tebhaga Movement

The Tebhaga movement is a militant campaign started in Bengal, India, by the Kisan Sabha (peasants of the Indian Communist Party) in 1946. At the time, the peasants had to give half of their crop to the owners of Earth. The Tebhaga movement (which means "share in thirds") wanted to give only a third of the harvest to the owners.

The peasants have often become violent and many landowners have fled leaving their land to the Kisan Sabha.

The government then passed Bargader's law, which provides that the owners can not take more than one-third of the harvest. This law has not been fully implemented.
