The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, also known by its acronym UNSCEAR, was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1955. Its mission is to estimate levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation , and report them. The reports of the Committee are used as a scientific basis to assess the risks of radiation and to establish radiation protection measures.

The General Assembly designated 21 countries to provide scientists as members of the Committee.

Since its inception, the Committee has only issued 15 major publications, but these reports are considered authoritative sources of information.
