Mogwai (china culture)

A Mogwai (魔怪 Jyutping: mo1 gwaai3, standard Chinese: 魔鬼; pinyin: móguǐ) is a being from Chinese mythology, his name means «evil spirit» or «demon». In folklore, the Mogwai are small creatures that reproduce with rainwater, usually falling apart and producing a large lineage as the rain increases their lust. They are considered a metaphorical representation of the "abundance" that water can bring of rain for the crops that, uncontrolled, can cause damage. His name was popularized with the film produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante Gremlins which presents the mogwai as small furry beings of nice appearance that, when fed after from midnight, they transform into malevolent gremlins (a kind of naughty goblin from European mythology). Originally both creatures had no relationship. The word mogui is also used in translations from the bible to Mandarin for «devil».
