William Douglas began his sports career in 1914 at the rowing club in his city Paysandú. In 1915, with only 15 years of age, they participated in the Colón-Paysandú resistance race. After that he took the competitive rowing and trained in the capital, Montevideo. In 1931, Douglas won the individual scull in the first United States Rowing Championship in the Bay of Montevideo.
Douglas was the first winner of the Olympic medal in Uruguay in an individual competition. Previously, only the soccer team had won gold medals in 1924 and 1928. In recognition of its third position, the Montevideo Rowing Club awarded it a gold and displacement medal.
He was again successful in 1935 in the 2nd South American Championship in Rio de Janeiro, winning a silver medal. He was also a multiple national champion and won numerous competitions in the waters of the rivers Tigre, Luján and La Plata in Argentina.
In 1997, the Uruguayan post office issued a stamp commemorating its achievement.
