Gomukha mudra

Gomukha mudra, also strangled gesture, is a mudra in hatha yoga. A mudra (Sanskrit for stamp or gesture) is a term that goes back to the classical texts of the Vedas and in this case means that the hand is held in a certain position, which drives Prana in a certain way. Mudras are mainly practiced during meditation.

In gomukha mudra the hands are intertwined so that the fingers of each hand alternate and the left thumb is on the nail of the right thumb. The palms form a tilted scale. The thumb represents the divine energy and is the symbol of willpower that is not conditioned by karma. In this mudra the two thumbs symbolize that the soul of man manifests itself on two different levels, the mind being the left thumb and the body the right thumb. This mudra would have the effect of unification between body and mind and is the symbol of harmony.
