Kalenjin people

Lornah Kiplagat

Kalenjin are an ethnic group of nilotic origin originating in the African region of the Rift Valley, in western Kenya and western Uganda, whose current population is estimated at about three million people. The entire kalenjin population is in turn an intricate network of small tribal groups, such as elgeyo, endorois, kipsigis, marakwet, pokot, sabaot, tugen and sebei. The mode of subsistence of all of them is based on the grazing of herds, way of life that they are supposed to maintain since their arrival from Sudan, some two thousand years ago.

Until the early 1950s this ethnic group did not have a common denomination; in the anthropological literature they were known as 'nandihablantes tribes'. They constitute approximately 12% of the nomadic population of Kenya.
