Bonkoro I


Bonkoro I Bodipo was a king of the Bengo people of the Bay of Corisco.

On the island of Corisco and the nearby continental territory lived the Benga ethnic group; the area was acquired by Spain in 1843, when on March 14 landed in Corisco the Spanish officer Juan Jose Lerena y Barry that the following day (15 of March of 1843) made a treaty (Tika Treaty) with the benga king Bonkoro I , by which the king put its possessions under Spanish protectorate.This provoked a revolt of the natives against its king, who fled to Cabo San Juan. A rebel leader (Imunga) proclaimed himself king. Bonkoro I died in 1857 in the area of ​​Cabo de San Juan and was succeeded by his son Bonkoro II.
