Bridgewater Treaties


The Bridgewater Treaties are a series of eight natural theology treatises written by several authors commissioned by the Earl of Bridgewater. Description The Rev. Francis Henry, Earl of Bridgewater, who died in February 1829 bequeathed in his will £ 8,000 to finance the writing of a series of treatises "on the power, wisdom, and goodness of God as manifest in Creation. " This sum was available to the President of the Royal Society of London, who had to pay the people he had chosen to draw up the Treaties. The result of this posthumous commission was the eight volumes that make up the so-called Bridgewater Treaties:
