Myristic acid

Myristic acid is a fatty acid with chemical formula C14H28O2

Also called tetradecanoic acid, it is a common saturated fatty acid, with the molecular formula CH3 (CH2) 12COOH.

A myristate is the salt or ester of myristic acid.

It got its name from nutmeg (Myristica fragrans); and its butter has 75% trimyristin, a triglyceride composed of three molecules of myristic acid. In addition to nutmeg, this acid is found in palm oil, lard and spermaceti, the crystallized fraction of whale blub oil.
