Aiud (municipio)


Aiud (in Hungarian Enyed, Nagyenyed, in the Saxon dialect Änjet, Angetn, Stroßbrich, in German Straßburg am Mieresch, in Latin Brucla) is a municipality in Alba county, Transylvania, România.

The Hungarian place-name, the old German and the Romanian city come from the name of Saint Egidiu

According to the census conducted in 2011, the population of the Aiud municipality rises to 22,876 inhabitants, compared to the previous census of 2002, which registered 28,934 inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants are Romanians (74.12%). The main minority are Hungarians (14.71%) and Gypsies (4.07%). The rest of the population (6.99%), ethnicity is not known. In religious terms the great majority of the population is Orthodox (72.07%), but there are minorities of reformed (12.06%), Greek-Catholic (3.19%) and Roman Catholic (1.29%).
