Oscar served in the Royal Prussian Grenadiers Regiment during the First World War. After the war he became a member of the veteran union Stahlhelm. He also joined all kinds of monarchistic movements that emerged at the time of the Weimar Republic. In 1927 he succeeded his brother Eitel Frits as the 35th Lord of the Lord of the Order of the Order of the Lord. He stayed to his death.

Despite his opposition to the Nazis, he was called to serve in World War II, but he did not actively participate in the war. Until his great sorrow, his eldest son fell during the war against Poland in 1939.
