El Purche


The Purche is a mountain port and a small hamlet located in the Sierra Nevada, within the municipality of Monachil, in the province of Granada, Spain.

It is located, about 12 km above Monachil, on the Sierra Nevada road from Monachil, but also from Huétor Vega, you can climb to the top passing the Road of Los Neveros. Geography

It is located at a height of 1,495 m, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, from which you can see the entire Vega de Granada. A little further up is the old Sierra Nevada leprosy hospital, also, near its Nearby is the Natural Park of the Cahorros.Cuenta with a camping, and several restaurants. Back to Spain

The Purche is a port several times used in the Vuelta a España although it is named Monachil, located just before the ascent to the Sierra Nevada. The last time the Vuelta went through the Purche was in 2013, then down the Sierra Nevada road to Pinos Genil and Güéjar Sierra and ending with the victory of North American runner Chris Horner in Alto de Hazallanas.

Its hardness and characteristics make it one of the ports that without being high end usually have more differences between the favorites, being many times decisive in the race.
