Neuroendocrinology is the study of the interaction between the nervous system and the endocrine glands, including the biological characteristics of the cells involved and how they communicate. The nervous and endocrine systems often act together in a process called neuroendocrine integration, to regulate the physiological processes of the human body. Neuroendocrinology arose from the recognition that the brain, especially the hypothalamus, controls the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland; and it is for this reason that this field was subsequently extended to investigate numerous interconnections of the nervous and endocrine system.
The neuroendocrine system is the mechanism by which the hypothalamus maintains homeostasis, regulation of reproduction, metabolism, eating and drinking behavior, energy utilization, and blood pressure.
