Ramón Nouvilas


Ramón Nouvilas y Rafols (Castellón de Ampurias, December 18, 1812 - Madrid, May 30, 1880) was a Spanish soldier and politician. Biography

Military man who distinguished himself in the civil war fighting against the Carlists; defeated the Carlist general Cabrera in 1849. Liberal and republican spirit, was banished several times by the various governments of Elizabeth II. After the triumph of the Revolution of 1868, was Senator for Murcia in 1871, obtained the captaincy general of Catalonia, and then the presidency of the Board responsible for drafting the new military general ordinance. Almost all of his promotions he won for campaign merits. Shortly after being proclaimed the Republic was appointed Minister of War by Pi and Margall in May 1873, a position that coincided with the leadership of the Army of the North when the Third Carlist War broke out in 1872. Destined in Catalonia, was defeated and imprisoned by the Carlist Savalls in Castellfollit. After the Bourbon restoration in Spain he was confined to Majorca and the Canaries until 1879, when he died a year short of exile from exile.
