Gryllus (mythology)

Gryllus is a friend of Odysseus in Greek mythology. If the Odysseus story and his friends arrive on the island of Aeaea, a group led by Eurylochos will investigate. They meet the sorcerer Circe, who turns them into pigs. The pigs, however, retain their human mind. Later, friends are again taken to man.

Gryllus is also the title of one of the writings in the Moralia of the Greek writer Plutarchus. It's a humorous text in which Gryllus, as a pig, discusses the odds and disadvantages of Odysseus with Odysseus. Gryllus prefers his existence as a pig, because he believes that in self-control and desires the people are under the animals. He focuses primarily on human wickedness.
