Elmar Schmid (Binn, 1947) is a Swiss professor of clarinet and chamber music at the Zurich Higher School of Music, where he also develops an intense professional artistic activity.

Performed his musical studies in Zurich with teachers Marcel Wahlich and Hansjörg Leuthold and, in Berlin, with Karl Leister.

His broad musical interests focus on his dedication to New Music and to the original folk music. He is musical director of the group "Oberwalliser Spillit", for whom the composer Heinz Holliger composed the "Alb Cher". Jürg Wittenbach dedicated to this musical group, in 1999, its composition "Gragantua chez les Helvètes du Haut-Wallais" (Scenes according to Rabelais).
