Helvio China

Cayo Helvio Cina was a Roman poet from the first century BC. C., was one of the representatives of the neoteric poets.

His work Zmyrna, which took nine years to compose, is one of the most representative samples of the group. It is a mythological epic centered on the incestuous love of Smyrna (or Mirra) towards his father, Cíniras, treated in the erudite and allusive way of the Alexandrian poets. He was a friend of Catullus (poem 10, 29-30: my sodalis / Cinna est Gaius). When the Zmyrna was completed, ca. 55 a. C., Catulus described it as a great achievement, of nine harvests and nine winters of elaboration.

Ovid included him in his list of celebrated poets and erotic writers (Tristia 2,435).
