Jan Wiegers

Jan Wiegers (1956)

Jan Wiegers (Kommerzijl, 31 July 1893 - Amsterdam, November 30, 1959) was a Dutch painter, attached to Expressionism.

He studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, as well as in Rotterdam and The Hague. In 1917 he became a member of the group of artists De Ploeg ('The Plow'), close to Die Brücke but with a tendency towards abstraction. During a stay in Davos, Switzerland, in 1920, he became friends with the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, from whom he would receive a great influence. In 1934 he moved to Amsterdam, where in 1953 he was appointed professor of the National Academy (Rijksacademie).
