Painted Desert (South Australia)

Created about 80 million years ago, the Painted Desert located in Southern Australia, unlike the Arizona Painted Desert, is a truly spectacular desert due to the different shades and colors present in its geography. The effects of erosion on the remains of what was once an inland sea and the seepage of minerals in the soil have together created the diversity of colors that can be admired today. The Painted Desert is located northeast of Coober Pedy, a few miles from Arckaringa. It is also distinguished by its distinctive tables, mountains and geological formations. Not far from there, on the way to Oodnadatta, you can see large areas of mica covered soil and soft sand rocks.
