Pull a bell

Calling a bell, borrowing a bell or borrowing a bell (Flanders: belleke trek) is a baldy practical joke that makes it possible to call someone without the intention of visiting or speaking that person. The game is played by children since the nineteenth century.

Bell-pulling is performed mainly by children and youth in many parts of the world. Usually, the perpetrator will be taken away in order not to be discovered by the occupant (s). Sometimes an object is attempted to lock the doorbell so that it keeps ringing.

A brutal variant is to keep waiting for the door to open and then run away, preferably with the remark: "Sorry, I forgot to run away."
