Taler

Táleros.

The thaler (from the German thaler or taler, that is to say: vallense, from the valley), according to the spelling used since 1901) is an old silver coin from Germany.

Etymologically, "Thaler" is an abbreviation of "Joachimsthaler", a coin from the city of Joachimsthal in Bohemia (now Jáchymov in the Czech Republic), where they were minted in 1518. But the first ones were coined in 1486 in Burg Hasegg, (Hall in Tirol, Austria). After that date the sovereigns of Germany and Austria minted large silver coins, following the model of the Thaler. It was an important silver coin, which was first called guldengroschen (fractional currency). Later it was understood as a thaler to a large number of coins that weighed more than one Lot.

From the linguistic point of view, the thaler, the Slovenian tolar and the dollar come from the same root.
