The battle of Solferino opposed to this place on June 24, 1859 the Franco-Sardinian and Austrian armies; the commemoration of the victory of the army of the French Emperor Napoleon III gave the following names: Solferino, frigate armored spur launched in 1861 commissioned in 1862, struck off the ranks in 1882. In Luz-Saint-Sauveur (Hautes-Pyrénées), a chapel named "Solférino" was erected to commemorate the Battle of Solferino and a plaque recalls the creation of the Red Cross.
