Metachromasia is the property of some tissues to alter the natural color of a dye; it allows cytological studies under the microscope. For example, toluidine blue at acidic pH reacts with common connective tissue and changes from red to purple (indicates the presence of many carbohydrates). More simply, it is the color change according to the molecules fixed by the dye.
