Tarawa North (in Gilbert Tarawa Ieta) is one of the three Urban Council communities in Tarawa Atoll. Separated from South Tarawa by a pass north of Bonriki (international airport), it is the least populated of the three communities of the atoll (with 6,619 inhabitants in 2015) and the most isolated, no bridge linking it to others . The village of Buota is the most populated with 1,871 inhabitants in 2015. In the village of Taborio, is the Immaculate Heart College. Its name Gilbertin (ieta) means the mast (of a sail) because of the general elongated shape of the atoll. Tarawa North is represented in Maneaba and Maungatabu by three seats of deputies. Its license plate is ETC (Eutan Town Council) but cars are rare for lack of roads.
