Splanchnocrone

The splanchnocranium, viscerocranium or facial skull, forms, with the neurocranium, the skull. This splanchnocranium is made up of visceral (or branchial) pairs of arches connected to the ventral level. During evolution these arches are transformed. The first gill arch will give the mandibular arch, the second the hyoid arch. The next five arcs will join the second arc.

Thus, the mandible, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone, the thyroid and cricoid cartilage are part of the visceral skeleton (splanchnocranium).
