Dempsey roll

The Dempsey Roll is a boxing technique characterized by its aggressiveness. It was created by the 1920s Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey. The movement consisted basically of a swinging movement, from left to right, using the upper extremities and the trunk. Of course it took a lot of speed and strength to make the body falter. As the trunk swayed, the head was spinning too, in a manner similar to that of the upper limbs. Once close to the opponent, and without realizing the movement, blows of left and right, until knocking down the rival. Despite being a very destructive and effective movement, you could easily stop with a backlash.

After the Dempsey era, the Dempsey roll was used by great boxers of different styles each. Among these, the most noteworthy is Mike Tyson, who using his short stature managed to easily perform the Dempsey roll and make to fall to the canvas to great part of its rivals due to its great strength.

Fictional Variations

In the course of the Japanese animation series "Spirit of Struggle" Hajime no Ippo, the main character Ippo Makunouchi develops variations of this technique to combat the numerous challenges that he receives from other boxers who believe that they can exploit the weakness of the Dempsey roll. In theory, the variations are based on current boxing principles, yet no boxer today has been able to apply these principles today. Video Games Appearances
