Manganaat

Structural formula of the manganate ion.

Manganese is an anion of formula MnO4, where manganese is in oxidation state + VI. Manganate is the conjugated base of the hypothetical manganese acid (H2MnO4). Manganese salts are usually intermediates in the industrial production of potassium permanganate.

The manganate ion has a tetrahedral structure. It is stable in aqueous solutions, but only in strong-basic conditions. Manganates can be formed by oxidation of manganese (IV) oxide or by reduction of permanganate. They are strong bases (about 100 times as basic as the acetate ion) and have paramagnetic properties.
