Sub-Culture

Sub-Culture is a New Order song appearing on the 1985 Low-Life album. The melody is sublime and immediately catchy, packed in an electronic production that foreshadows with genius the future productions of American deep house . This song will particularly influence the style of the Pet Shop Boys. New Order decides to publish it in maxi-single and, to do this, orders a remix to the producer John Robie. The result will be a controversial version, heavily influenced by Euro-Disco, which will take away much of the magic of the original version. So much so that Peter Saville, the appointed designer of New Order, horrified by this remix, will simply refuse to design the cover. The Sub-Culture maxi will be released in September 1985 under a DJ copy cover but will nevertheless be a big success in clubs and discotheques.
