A route or sea route is a route taken over or through one or more seas, oceans and / or sea streets. A route can be compared to a road or airway in the air, in the sense that during the trip preparation certain points (such as ports) are taken and a predetermined course follows. For the trip preparation, see sailing instructions.

Seagulls have existed since the moment people began to move across the sea. There are no written sources about the first routes.

The same highways are often used to get from point A to point B. During the colonial era, it was often traveled through Cape of Good Hope and Cape Hoorn. Via Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America, one could fly to the Pacific by Atlantic Ocean and vice versa. Through Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost tip of Africa, one could fly from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean and vice versa.

Depending on the type of ship, wind, water depth and flow must be taken into account.
